Meet The City By The Sea Veterinary Hospital Team

Dr. Avery Kasten

Medical Director

Dr. Avery Kasten joined the City by the Sea team in August 2020 and is our Medical Director. What does this mean? Basically, she makes sure everyone stays engaged in the latest industry standards of care for veterinary medicine and surgery. She is originally from Somerville, but is a beach bum at heart and now lives in the Asbury Park area. She attended Rutgers University for undergraduate studies, where she met her husband, Dr. Tom Caltabilota. Following college, she was accepted at Oklahoma State University for veterinary school, then briefly moved back to New Jersey for an internship at Garden State Veterinary Specialists. While Dr. Tom completed his veterinary studies in Alabama, she worked ER overnights in Birmingham. Now home, Dr. Kasten enjoys the variety of general practice, but particularly loves dentistry and geriatric medicine. Her outside activities include yoga, vegetable gardening (despite a black thumb), and spending time with her husband, son, and 3 rescue pups Andouille, Mimi, and Rubble.

Dr. Teresa Conway

Associate Veterinarian

Dr. Conway has been with City by The Sea since 2019. She brings with her over 25 years of experience as a general practitioner in small animal medicine.

She initially became interested in veterinary medicine as a 7th grader living in upstate New York. Following that passion, she received a Bachelor’s in Animal Science from the University of Massachusetts and then earned her veterinary degree from the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1995. While she initially envisioned life as a mixed animal practitioner (treating both large and small animals) or zoo/wildlife veterinarian, after graduation she started practicing small animal medicine and surgery and eventually focused on small animal medicine.

Dr. Conway has a special interest in caring for senior pets and helping them live longer, healthier lives. She believes good preventive care throughout a pet’s life, which includes regular exams to address physical and behavioral issues, is a cornerstone to this goal.

Dr. Conway lives in Monmouth County with her veterinarian husband and her son, Ryan. She has a blind rescue pug named Izzy and four cats, Sookie, Rumple, Cutie Pie and Zesty, that rule the household. In her free time she enjoys reading, gardening, cooking and visiting friends and family.

Dr. Brianna Stafford

Associate Veterinarian

Dr. Brianna Stafford has been practicing at City by the Sea since 2019. She attended Rutgers University for her undergraduate studies, earning a Bachelor’s in Animal Science with 4 Minors. She then completed her veterinary training at Western University of Health Sciences in Southern California, graduating in 2017. Returning to Jersey, Dr. Bri went on to work in private practice and trained in Alternative Medicine.

Dr. Stafford has a special interest in holistic medicine, acupuncture, and laser therapy.

She resides in Colts Neck with her 2 horses, Mulligan and Guliver; her dog, Shelby; and 2 cats, Flit and Mr. Edgar Allen Poe. Her hobbies include hiking, baking, yoga, horseback riding and landscaping.

Dr. Erica Falvey

Associate Veterinarian

Dr. Erica Falvey recently joined City By The Sea Vet as an Associate Veterinarian in July 2021.

Growing up in Lincroft, NJ, she knew very early on that she wanted to be a veterinarian. Her early love for animals and science made it an easy choice!

She earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry at the University of Mary Washington and then went on to study at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. There she earned her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine degree and graduated in 2020.

Following vet school, Dr. Falvey completed a year-long internship at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital located in Tinton Falls. Her interests include a little bit of everything — that’s why she ultimately chose General Practice!

Today Dr. Falvey resides in her home town and has 2 dogs, Colby and Riley (“the boys”). Her hobbies include cooking and exercising when she’s not too busy giving the boys well deserved walks and treats!

Karen Nalio

Head Technician/Practice Manager

How long have you been working in the veterinary field?

For 8 years, I started out as a kennel assistant and immediately started school to get certified.

What made you want to work in the veterinary field?

When my dog got sick years ago, I brought him to Garden State Vet and they saved his life. He was only comfortable with one technician and she made both him and myself feel more comfortable. That made me realize that I wanted to be that comfort for other people and their pets.

What do you like about your job?

I absolutely love working with animals and seeing cats and dogs every day. But also meeting new people who bring their pets here, educating them on what they can do to better their pet’s lives, and make them feel at ease when their pets aren’t well.

How many pets do you have?

I have two, Eddie and Violet, who love to go on long walks every day, especially to the beach.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

I love activities with my own dogs, mostly hiking or going to the beach. I also enjoy spending time with my family and niece, Emily.

How long have you been working in the veterinary field?

I have been working in the field for about 5-6 years, starting with my technician school internship.

What made you want to work in the veterinary field?

I’ve loved animals for as long as I can remember, and had initially grown up wanting to be a veterinarian. I can’t picture myself doing any other job. My dream job would be to win the lottery, move to the Dominican Republic, and open an animal sanctuary.

What do you like about your job?

I like helping those that don’t have a voice. I especially enjoy meeting new animals every day and treating them like they are my own.

How many pets do you have?

I have two dogs, a Maltese named “Baby,” and a Black Lab named “South.”

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

In my free time I like to try out new restaurants and go hiking. I especially enjoy party planning and decorating. And of course, I love any time I get to spend with my pups.
