Keeping Your Pet Safe in Asbury Park, NJ in the Summer
What should I look out for when I walk my dog in hot weather?
You want to be careful about the temperature outside. Ambient temperature is important, but also the temperature of the pavement or blacktop. Dogs can get thermal burns from contact. You don't want them overheating either, through increased activity on walks, running outside at the park, or just sitting in the car. Heat strokes can occur in a very short period of time and be life-threatening. It's best to avoid these situations and take your pet out in the early morning or late evening to avoid any potential scenarios.
What should I keep in mind when visiting the Jersey Shore with my dog?
You want to make sure your pet is able to swim if you are planning to do any water activities, to avoid any drowning incidents. That can be a huge concern, especially if you decide to go to some sort of yappy hour or other dog event. Make sure your dog is comfortable in that situation because you don't want to run into any dog fights and emergency wound repairs. Beyond that, we always worry about insect bites and similar issues. If there's abrupt swelling in a portion of your dog's body or face, definitely call your emergency vet to get them taken care of ASAP.
